Explore Lush Forests, Rushing Waterfalls, & More on a Hike
Immersing yourself in Kauai’s diverse environments is one of the best things to do on the island for free. Whether you want to explore a tropical forest, powerful waterfalls, or sweeping canyons, there is a Kauai hike for you.
One of Kauai’s most popular hiking trails is Kalalau Trail. Located on Kauai’s North Shore, Kalalau Trail is an 11-mile hike. If you can get it done in a day, you will not need to pay for a camping permit, but you are in for an exhausting outing. Still, Hanakapiai Falls is a beautiful destination. If you are looking for a shorter option, you can enjoy the trail by shortening it to a four-mile round trip hike to Hanakapiai Beach.
Kalalau Trail is just one of Kauai’s many stellar hiking trails. For more information on Kauai’s hiking trails, browse our Kauai Activities blogs.
Watch Water Erupt Out of Spouting Horn
Take in a natural wonder on Kauai’s South Shore. Spouting Horn shoots water up to 60 feet into the air, an incredible free display to behold. Here is how it works, the Pacific surf slams into the rocky coastline and funnels under a small lava shelf into a natural lava tube. The water spouts up out of a hole and into the air with a loud hiss and roar. Meanwhile, the pressure that shot the water up escapes through another hole.
Spouting Horn is near many other free things to do in Kauai, like Poipu Beach, so even if you are staying on the North Shore, a trip over to see Spouting Horn and more is worth it.
