When you are looking for child friendly Kauai beaches on the East Shore, add Fuji Beach to your list of things to do on Kauai. Located in the heart of Kapaa and a short drive from our Kauai vacation rentals at Hale Awapuhi, this beach is famous for its long limestone shelf that creates a shallow tide pool for all ages to enjoy.
On our recent visit we saw families with small children playing in the ocean, fishermen casting their lines and kite boarders surfing off in the distance. During low tide the protected swimming area is especially calm for splashing about and seeing tiny creatures of the sea.
Fuji is located between Waipouli Beach and Kapaa Beach Park. The road here along the ocean is called Moanakai and is also a stop for bicyclists and walkers on the Kauai Coastal Path. This path hugs the ocean most of the way between Lydgate Beach and Donkey Beach. If you arrive by car instead, you can park along the ocean wall and be just steps from sand making this one of our most accessible Kauai beaches.
Locally known as Baby Beach, which is not to be confused with Baby Beach in Poipu, Fuji was named after a beloved family doctor who had a medical practice close to here many years ago. Dr. Fuji was the first doctor to administer the Salk vaccine in the Territory of Hawaii in 1957, and delivered more than 2,000 babies during his career.
For someone who loved children, this keiki friendly beach is a perfect choice to be named after Dr. Fuji. It runs a generous mile long and is popular with locals and visitors. A few blocks away is the center of Kapaa where you can find places to eat and shop.
Fuji Beach Facilities: Drinking fountains and restrooms are located near the north end pedestrian bridge. There is also a shower in the mid-area of the beach. No lifeguard is on duty so please use caution and never swim alone.
Driving Directions: If you are coming from the North Shore, make a left turn on Makaha Road after All Saints Episcopal Church. Those of you coming from Poipu will turn right on Makaha Road before reaching the church. Once you turn, drive two blocks to the end of the road and turn left on Moanakai Road. Fuji will be on your right.
Now it’s your turn to share favorite memories of Fuji Beach. We welcome your comments and suggestions.
