Are you excited to see The Descendants starring George Clooney? I am but I’ll have to wait. Even though the movie was filmed close to our Hanalei vacation rentals, it’s playing everywhere across the country except here.
If you’ve had a chance to see the movie, tell me your favorite scenes. I plan to write about the locations in an upcoming post including the one pictured here at Pine Trees.
The release of the movie inspired me to film my own video around Hanalei. While it’s not ready for an Oscar like The Descendants, you’ll get a chance to see a Kauai vacation rental from our Hanalei Collection.
Hale O`Kale is close to the beach, has space for 8 guests and starts at $275 nightly. You can experience all the gorgeous locations from the movie without the price tag of an oceanfront vacation rental.
The buzz around The Descendants is great for Kauai. I hear the soundtrack is going to make Hawaii slack-key guitar all the rage. When the movie makes it to Kukui Grove Cinema, I’ll be first in line with the rest of Kauai.
Are you planning a trip to Kauai after seeing The Descendants?

I’m in Melbourne ,Australia. and saw The Descendants last night.I’d read online that it was filmed on Oahu, but was very excited and “emotional”,when I saw they actually went to Kauai,my favourite Island in the world.Ive been there 5 times, the last was October 2010.SO exciting seeing them arriving in Lihue, walking through Hanalei town, and along the beach, with the Pier in the background.I was very pleased about the outcome of their “Land sale” in the movie.I also watched the Golden Globes 4 times,on Monday, our time, and after seeing the movie,George really did deserve it!:) I also love Slack key,and this movie will promote it everywhere .My favourite view is of Hanalei Bay and the mountains.Would love to go back

Aloha Wendy! We’re excited too that Kauai is featured in The Descendants. I hope you can return soon. Since your last visit they have trimmed the foliage on the road down to Hanalei after the lookout. You now have incredible views of the bay on your approach. The slack key music from the film I’m sure makes you dream of our Garden Island. You live in a beautiful part of the world too. Melbourne is a favorite city of mine and I enjoy your Queen Victoria Market. We look forward to hosting you on your sixth trip to Kauai.

Wow!!! Can’t wait to see the movie. We were in Kauai (North Shore) Princeville, this summmer and our family fell in love the peacefulness, untouched beauty and the energy there is jusy simply amazing!!! A few of our favortie spots there were the Napli Coast Line, Wailua Falls and Queens Bath (I remember a few locals telling us about and they said it could a little dangerous, if you decide to check it , just be careful).

“The Descendants” is truly a wonderful Oscar-worthy movie, and the stunning Kauai locales make me yearn for our annual month on Poipu next March. My question is, where did they film the scenes with the beach that was the the centerpiece of the King family land trust? In the movie, they were driving north on Kuhio Highway, turned mauka and drove till they came upon the beach, which of course is impossible. Thanks for clearing this up for me.

Aloha Joel…from what I can tell, the property the King family holds in the movie is the area around Kipu Kai Beach on the South Shore (and as you say, impossible to get via the route they take in the movie). If you are looking at an island map, in general, it is between Kalapaki/Niwiliwilii and Mahaulepu. It is inaccessible by auto and mostly visited by boat. I have personally paddled there and it is spectacular. Also, when you are flying in, if you sit on the left side of the plane, you can see if just prior to landing. We look forward to hosting you in March.
