Watch Paddle Fest 2013 at Kukui`ula Bay. Saturday, June 30th, 10am to 3:00 pm.
Our south shore Kauai vacation rental guests have a perfect view of Paddle Fest every June. Under a blue Hawaii sky, outrigger teams from around Kauai compete in this 15 mile race from Kalapaki Beach in Lihue to Kukui`ula Bay and a shorter 2.5 mile course from Poipu Beach Park. In addition to a great race, there are fun activities for the whole family to enjoy after.
This annual event is sponsored by the Kukui`ula Outrigger Canoe Club. We expect 150 participants of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. In addition to six person canoe teams, there are OC-1 and OC-2 paddlers too. Also look for Surf Ski, Stand-up and Prone Paddle Board competitors.
Before starting the race the teams hold hands to unite them mentally and spiritually. Once in their canoes the first challenge in the long course is at Carter Point. This is the Cape you see just before landing at Lihue airport. The ocean is rough here and it is a wild ride until you reach the other side going towards Poipu Beach.
“The outrigger teaches everyone about teamwork and pulling together. Competition is friendly and each team actively supports local charities like the Kauai Food Bank.” –JP Parrish
After the race ends at Kukui`ula Bay, the canoes are returned to dry land. Like the early Hawaiians did, the teams point each canoe towards the water as a sign of respect for its spirit. Then the celebration begins with all of the participants and visitors.
